If you take a quick scroll through Instagram, SnapChat or YouTube you might be deluded into thinking that the only people that are ‘living their best lives’ or are widely revered are millennials or the Gen Z kids. But if you take a bit of a closer you look, you’ll inevitably find another cohort of influencers–women in their 50’s, 60, 70’s and even 80’s. These women are single-handedly redefining what it means to be fit and fabulous at any age.

There’s a common misconception that the older we get the more we should slow down to prevent injury and accidents. But nothing could be further from the truth.

To stay healthy, the World Health Organization recommends doing 30 minutes of moderate activity at least five days a week for the prevention of heart disease, osteoarthritis, and hypertension as well as improving balance and coordination.

In addition to lowering one’s risk of a number of health conditions, regular exercise can help seniors remain independent longer and decreases the likelihood that they’ll end up in the hospital or in a nursing home. Mobility, posture and strength are typically the biggest fitness goals for seniors, experts say.

As our general life expectancy increases, we need to be more and more cognizant of the importance of using fitness as a means of maintaining a better quality of life.
