When someone tells me that they ‘can’t’ do something, it typically means that they just don’t want to. The truth is, language holds tremendous power. It can be used as a means to motivate us and it can also mean the difference between success and failure. Every time you say the word can’t, you immediately insert a negative visualization of the problem in your mind, making it even more difficult to overcome.

-Can’t Is A Word In A Fool’s Dictionary

I detest the word can’t. Not only is it crippling, it’s also one of the biggest distinguishers between those that achieve excellence versus those that remain in a state of mediocrity. When someone tells me that they ‘can’t’ do something, it typically means that they just don’t want to. Whereas sometimes, it may be perfectly reasonable: I can’t go out tonight is simply a statement of fact, if you don’t have anyone to watch your kids. But more often then not, I can’t is loaded down with self-limitation and judgement: I can’t draw, I can’t lose weight, I can’t stay motivated… Whenever we say we can’t do something, we reinforce that message in our minds.

The truth is, language holds tremendous power. It can be used as a means to motivate us and it can also mean the difference between success and failure. Every time you say the word can’t, you immediately insert a negative visualization of the problem in your mind, making it even more difficult to overcome. Your mind creates a barrier because it has already seen a negative outcome.

So how do you stop yourself from believing you can’t do something?

Lots of ways… First, think about the most successful people you know. How many times have you heard them say the word ‘can’t’. I’d venture to say not many. If successful people were riddled with thoughts of lack and limitation then they probably would never have achieved success in the first place. Next, dig deep to see if the issue has to do more with fear then the ability to achieve something. If fear is the culprit, simply let it go because on the other side of fear is always greatness. Lastly, are you in need of a confidence boost? Often times our reason for thinking  that we ‘can’t’ do something is rooted in a lack of self-confidence and insecurity. If this is the case, then try telling yourself the opposite of what has not been serving you. For instance, instead of telling yourself that you’re not good enough or strong enough to complete a task, talk to yourself about the countless other amazing things you’ve managed to achieve in your life. Give yourself your own confidence boost.
